On August 10, during a political fundraiser, U.S. President Joe Biden stated that the country of China was surrounded by economic and social problems. Biden’s comment that the country was a “ticking time bomb” worsened U.S. and China tensions as the president described how the internal problems could impact how the capital Beijing interacts with the world.

Furthermore, an article in Reuters states that the U.S. and China tensions continued to worsen as Biden misstated the country’s growth rate to 2% a year. This was because the National Bureau of Statistics of China revealed that their economy grew by 4.5% in the first quarter of 2023 and 6.3% in the second. In addition, the gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0.8% from April to June after a 2.2% increase in the first quarter.
