A group of Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Sean Casten (D-Ill.), has reintroduced HR8821, a crucial measure aimed at eliminating the cost barrier to obtaining government IDs.
Costs of Government IDs
This initiative, supported by Project ID Action Fund, seeks to address poverty and unemployment among millions of Americans who struggle to access essential services without proper identification, The Hill reported. By providing no-cost federal photo IDs accessible to all Americans over the age of 14, the Government IDs for an Inclusive Democracy Act aims to empower individuals and boost the American economy as a whole.
The Government IDs for an Inclusive Democracy Act aim to remove the significant hurdle faced by approximately 11% of American adults who lack a government-issued photo government ID. Rep. Sean Casten emphasized that this amounts to around 26 million people who are unable to fulfill necessities such as securing employment, housing, access to shelters, medical care, and exercising their voting rights. The proposed bill offers a practical solution to this issue by making no-cost photo government IDs available to every American aged 14 and above.
Project ID Action Fund CEO Kat Calvin praised the bill, stating that it has the potential to fundamentally transform the lives of those without an issued government ID, impacting both individuals and the broader American economy. By removing the barriers created by lack of identification, millions of people would gain access to employment opportunities, housing options, medical care, and various essential services.
The proposed legislation has garnered support from multiple organizations, including the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Care in Action, Minority Veterans of America, and the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved. These organizations recognize the profound impact that providing government IDs at no cost can have on improving the lives and prospects of millions of Americans.
