Nelson Matus was shot to death inside his car in the parking lot of a store in Acapulco City. Reports say there were also attempts to assassinate the Mexican journalist in 2017 and 2019.
On July 15, at around 3:00 p.m., Mexican journalist Nelson Matus was shot to death in the coastal resort city of Acapulco in the southwestern state of Guerrero. Local media reported that the Mexican journalist was shot inside his vehicle in the parking lot of a store in the neighborhood of Emiliano Zapata in northern Acapulco.An article in US News states that the Mexican journalist was also the director of the local news website Lo Real de Guerrero. To date, the office of the state attorney general of Guerrero has not yet responded to a request for comment. Reforma, a Mexican newspaper states that there were also two attempts to assassinate the Mexican journalist back in 2017 and 2019 but he survived them.

Another Mexican Journalist Killed
According to an article in Reuters, Luis Martin Sanchez, another Mexican journalist, was also found dead in the state of Nayarit a week before Matus’ death. Reports say that Sanchez was a Mexican journalist from the publication La Jornada. Non-profit organization, Reporters without Borders states that in 2017, the country of Mexico was the deadliest in the world for journalists.
