The Marion County Sheriff’s Office filed court papers requesting that the suspect who strangled a deputy officer to death be transferred to Indiana. Reports say the suspect killed the deputy in a transport van in an attempt to escape prison.
On July 10, in a transport van returning to the Criminal Justice Center in Indianapolis, Orlando Mitchell, 34, used the chain of his handcuff to strangle Marion County Sheriff’s Office Deputy John Durm, 61.An article in USNews.com states that after Mitchell found the handcuff key from the Marion County Sheriff’s deputy, he unlocked himself and drove the transport van away from the detention center. However, after a short distance, the van crashed into a wooden pole.
Thereafter, other deputies from the Marion County Sheriff returned Mitchell to custody. On July 12, Mitchell was held at the Johnson County Jail near the city of Franklin. However, the decision on his charges is not expected until in the afternoon today, July 13.

Charges Against Marion County Sheriff Deputy Killer
According to an article in AP News, on July 13, the Marion County Sheriff filed court papers requesting that Mitchell be transferred to the custody of the Indiana Department of Correction. Kerry Forestal of the Marion County Sheriff stated in the court documents that Mitchell poses a risk of injury or death to individuals. Reports say Mitchell had been imprisoned since September 2022 awaiting the trial for killing his ex-girlfriend Krystal Walton.
