On July 2, at around 12:10 p.m., officers of the Prince George’s County Police Department responded to one of the carjacking spree incidents at Rolling Ridge Drive and Addison Road South in Capitol Heights. Upon arriving at the crime scene, investigators found that a Honda CRV was carjacked at gunpoint. However, the vehicle was later involved in a car crash nearby.

According to Wehner, the suspect then fled the crash scene to a fast-food restaurant on Ritchie Road. The suspect closed in on an Acura ILX in the drive-thru lane whose driver, Kurt Modeste, 56, was shot multiple times. Modeste was able to escape the scene but later died from the gunshot injuries he sustained from the carjacking spree.

Following the second of the carjacking spree incidents, the suspect once again stole a Toyota Scion that was also in the drive-thru lane. The suspect fatally shot two of the three dogs inside the vehicle and drove it to take off west on Central Avenue.
