On February 14, 2017, Liberty “Libby” German, 14, and Abigail Williams, 13, were killed while hiking on a popular trail in Delphi, Indiana. In October 2022, Richard Allen, 50, was arrested in connection with the murders.

According to Conklin, shortly before the victims’ remains were discovered in a wooded area, German was able to use her phone to capture images of a man who walked across them on the railroad. Prosecutors then associated Allen with the murders after an investigation found that an unspent bullet obtained at the crime scene belonged to a pistol he owned.

According to Harris, in a June filing, the murder suspect allegedly confessed to the killings while talking to his wife and his mother on public jail phones.
