Carl Gist shot a neighbor in the neck and barricaded himself at home when police officers attempted to approach him. After several hours of negotiations, the shooting suspect stepped out and pointed a gun at the officers who opened fire at him.

On June 24, at around 10:30 a.m., police officers responded to a report in the 3100 block of Weir Avenue in West Virginia. According to the information disclosed by the Weirton Police Department, Carl Gist, 82, shot his neighbor, Cassandra Jeter, 67, in the neck, while the victim was mowing her lawn.

An article in the Weirton Daily Times states that when the police officers arrived at the scene and attempted to approach Gist, he barricaded himself inside his home. After several hours of negotiations with the shooting suspect, at around 3 p.m., gas was reportedly released into the residence.

Several minutes thereafter, Gist stepped out from the house holding a semi-automatic pistol. Police officers allegedly ordered Gist to drop his weapon multiple times. However, the shooting suspect pointed the gun at the officers who opened fire at him in retaliation.

Shooting Suspect Killed

According to Nerozzi, Gist was provided first aid and transported to Weirton Medical Center in an ambulance. However, the shooting suspect was pronounced dead thereafter. On the contrary, Jeter was flown via a medical helicopter to a hospital in Pittsburgh. As of June 24, the victim’s condition is still unknown.
