On June 8, a 30-year-old Moroccan migrant was reportedly attempting to cross the river Evros in a small boat with two other men. Unfortunately, the migrant was wounded in his back by a gunshot while crossing from Turkey into Greece.

An article in Fox News states that when the boat reached the Greek border, the Moroccan migrant was immediately transported to a hospital with non-fatal injuries. On the contrary, the two other men with the migrant came out uninjured.

According to the Greek Police, the Moroccan migrant stated that he believes he was shot by someone from the Turkish gendarmerie. Nonetheless, the authorities declared that they will examine every possibility as to who had fired at the migrant from the Turkish side. Furthermore, they will reportedly look into whether migrant smugglers have been involved in the incident.

According to an article in Greek City Times, the river Evros is on the northeastern border of Greece along with Turkey. Reports say it is the major crossing point for individuals who are attempting to secretly enter Greece.

Earlier this week, officials from Greece reportedly held a series of high-level contacts with the newly elected officials of the Turkish government to fight the surge in attempted crossings. This means that patrols along the Greek border of the river have been strengthened. After the water level recently dropped, this apparently made it easier for migrants to attempt crossing the river.
