Today, June 6, commissioners are expected to vote if they should use $20.5 million in federal funds for a Guaranteed Income Pilot program in Harris County, Texas. If approved, the program intends to target helping neighborhoods with low incomes.

According to Natario, a federal report released in May revealed how much the cost of items increased compared to last year. Reportedly, the transportation increased by up to 11%, rent increased by 9%, food by 7%, and energy by 6%. Furthermore, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also stated that most households with four members paid almost $1,000 for groceries last month which was an increase of over $50 from 2022.

Who will qualify for the Guaranteed Income Pilot program?

According to Rice, to be able to qualify for the Guaranteed Income Pilot program, an individual must meet specific income requirements. Thereafter, an applicant will be randomly selected. Once chosen, the recipient will be given monthly payments worth $500 for 18 months.

Leaders of the Harris County stated that they decided on the amount of monthly payments to be able to help as many residents as possible. If the Guaranteed Income Pilot program gets approved, the recipients will be tracked to see how the payments affected their daily lives. Officials further explained that the results will help determine if such programs can continue in the future.
