Assault Suspect Attacks California Highway Patrol Officer; Bystanders Sprung Into Action

Bystanders intervened as an altercation between a California Highway Patrol officer and an unnamed man occurred. To date, the assault suspect remains at Orange County jail despite resisting arrest.

Reports say on May 19, at around 5 p.m., a man was yelling at drivers near the on-ramp to the Santa Ana freeway in California. Two officers from the California Highway Patrol then approached the man to issue a warning.

According to Aitken, when one of the officers left, the man picked a fight with the other officer,  immediately pinning him to the ground. That was when a bystander, Everardo Navarro, pulled over and went out of his car to help the officer in trouble.

However, Navarro struggled to get a hold of the assault suspect until two other men also came to help. Thereafter, the three bystanders pulled the assault suspect off the officer. Reportedly, the officer sustained minor injuries to his thumb, while the assault suspect was taken to a hospital for the injuries to his face.

Charges Faced by Assault Suspect

According to Solis, Anselmo Templado, the spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol, states that it is not very often to see bystanders spring into action to help officers. Templado adds that usually, bystanders just record what is happening, so he is thankful to the three men who helped their colleague out. Reports say the suspect faced charges of assault. To date, he reportedly remains at the Orange County jail despite resisting arrest.
