A man was charged with fatally shooting to death an Indianapolis police officer in 2020 after the officer responded to a domestic violence call and the accused pleaded an insanity defense as he attempts to bypass the death penalty.

Elliahs Dorsey killed the Indianapolis police officer Breann Leath of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Wednesday, Dorsey’s Attorneys filed a motion with the court saying a report prepared by a doctor states that Dorsey was suffering from a mental illness when he fatally shot to death the Indianapolis police officer in 2020.
AP News reporetd that Leath together with the other officers were responding to a domestic violence call involving Dorsey when the Indianapolis police officer was shot to death through the door of the apartment, Leath died instantly after stuffing two gunshots to her head.
Due to the shooting incident, Dorsey faces one count each of murder and criminal confinement, and four counts of attempted murder, one of which stems from his alleged shooting of a woman he had confined inside the apartment.

Elliahs Dorsey’s Defense Attorney Said His Client suffered From Insanity
Elliahs Dorsey’s attorneys acknowledged they filed their motion for an insanity defense later than normal but blamed the delay in part on issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Marion County judge headed this month that prosecutors can pursue the death penalty against Dorsey.
September 18 is set for Dorsey’s trial to begin.
