On May 26, a report was published by the National Immigration Law Center, a nonprofit group for immigrant rights. The report says a recent survey found that 27% of the DACA Program 2023 (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients are not insured by any type of health care plan.

According to an article in NBC News, under the DACA Program 2023, more than 580,000 young adults with no legal status are authorized to study and work without the fear of being deported. However, the recent survey results suggest that almost 157,000 recipients are not insured by the program.

Tom K. Wong, the founding director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Center at the University of California, administered the survey in 2022 with 817 DACA Program 2023 recipients. Furthermore, the National Immigration Law Center, the Center for American Progress policy institute, and the U.S.’s largest organization led by immigrant youths, United We Dream, have helped in the execution.

Previous Survey in 2021

An article in the Yahoo News states that a previous version of the survey was also conducted. In 2021, the survey results suggested that 34% of the DACA Program recipients were not insured. The National Immigration Law Center President Kica Matos associates the slight decrease to a healthier economic climate.

This means that since the 2021 survey was made during the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic trends are believed to have already improved. Under the DACA Program 2023, it is expected to have more recipients employed and gain access to health care.
