Rape Suspect in New Orleans Freed 29 Years Later After Victim Insists His Innocence

Patrick Brown was convicted of raping his stepdaughter in 1994 despite not pleading guilty. However, 29 years later, the wrongfully convicted rape suspect was released from prison after the victim has been insisting his innocence since 2002.

In 1994, Patrick Brown, then 20, was convicted of raping his stepdaughter, then 6, despite pleading not guilty in a trial which he also did not testify in. However, since 2002, the victim, had persistently requested for the District Attorney’s Office of Orleans Parish to review the case and convict the actual perpetrator.

Fortunately, an article in CNN states that after 29 years of serving in prison in New Orleans, the wrongfully convicted rape suspect was finally released. Reportedly, the civil rights division of the DA’s office started an investigation into the case. Eventually, they discovered that the evidence match the claims of the victim and asked the court to amend the case.

Wrongful Conviction to the Rape Suspect

According to Li, on May 8, the wrongfully convicted rape suspect was released from prison after Judge Calvin Johnson delivered the decision of the criminal district court to vacate his conviction. During the process, Brown was present and reportedly testified.

Thereafter, the wrongfully convicted rape suspect left the prison with only a small box containing his personal possessions. Kelly Orians, who represented Brown at the hearing, stated that it is expected that it will take years for her client to receive any compensation for the wrongful conviction. Due to this, Brown’s family has created a GoFundMe to help him begin to rebuild his life.
