Shooting Suspect Charged After Killing Man With Machete in Florida For Self-Defense

Bruce Brooks was charged after shooting a man in self-defense in Florida. Reports say the victim approached the shooting suspect wielding a machete.

On May 14, at around 3:30 a.m., officers from the Bradenton Police Department responded to a report about a shooting incident in a carport in Bradenton, Florida. Upon arriving at the crime scene, they found a man suffering from two gunshot injuries.

According to Wehner, the unnamed victim was transported to a hospital around the area. However, the victim was unfortunately pronounced dead thereafter. On the other hand, investigators attempted to locate the shooting suspect who reportedly fled the crime scene after the incident.

Charges Faced by Shooting Suspect

According to Shepard, the shooting suspect was eventually identified as Bruce Brooks, 35. Reports say Brooks had already been convicted as a felon before and is prohibited to possess a firearm.

Nonetheless, the shooting suspect contacted the authorities and reported that before 3:30 a.m. that day, the 32-year-old victim was involved in a domestic dispute outside his house.

Furthermore, the shooting suspect added that the dispute later escalated when the victim yelled at neighbors and armed himself with a machete. Thereafter, the victim walked into a neighboring yard and approached Brooks who was sleeping in the carport.

When the shooting suspect woke up, he saw the victim allegedly walk toward him with a machete. Because of this, Brooks shot the victim with a handgun in self-defense. Eventually, the suspect faced charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
