Termination of Medicaid Recipients in Florida Alarms Health Advocacy Groups

According to Yahoo News, the elevated number of procedural terminations of Medicaid Recipients in Florida has disturbed health advocacy groups. They are worrying about eligible families who might lose coverage because they were unaware of the requirements for their eligibility renewal.

An Orlando nonprofit group called The Florida Policy Institute was one of the groups who warned earlier this year of a “looming tidal wave of health coverage loss for children, parents, and young adults.”

CEO Sadaf Knight expressed that the state should hold the process and re-enroll those Medicaid Recipients in Florida who have been removed until they have verifies their eligibility.

Earlier this year, the Department of Children and Families released a plan to send notices to Medicaid recipients in Florida through their emails and letters. The notice states that those who lose coverage will be referred to other alternative programs including Florida KidCare and Hillsborough County.

Florida KidCare is a government-sponsored health insurance program and is a federally subsidized health center that treats and helps low-income patients while Hillsborough County runs a health care program for low-income residents funded through a sales tax.

As of Wednesday, Hillsborough County received 877 new applications. According to spokesperson Todd Pratt, this means more than 1,060 people applied this month.
