CBS News reported that a man was indicted for stealing an original pair of ruby slippers nearly two decades ago. The ruby slipper is one of the major artworks as it was worn by Judy Garland in the film “The Wizard of Oz.”

Man Charged For Stealing Ruby Slippers

Last August 2005, the ruby slippers were peacefully placed at Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. But, it was stolen by an unidentified suspect who broke a window in the museum to get inside.

Surprisingly, alarms were not sounded and no fingerprints are tracked after the stealing. So, no arrests were made after that incident, but the FBI had multiple suspects.

In 2018, the pair of original ruby slippers were recovered and are currently in FBI custody, according to Judy Garland Museum.

On Tuesday, a man named Terry Martin was indicted. But no further statements were released as to what led the investigators to file the charges.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota confirmed that the recovered ruby slippers are one of the four remaining pairs of shoes. One of the pairs was acquired by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences in 2012 while the other pair is at the Smithsonian Institution in Washinton.

Ruby Slippers Worn By Judy Garland

The ruby slippers were worn by Judy Garland in the film “The Wizard of Oz”, where she portrays Dorothy Gale in the 1939 film. In the film, Dorothy Gale taps her heels together while wearing them and will say “There’s no place like home,” and can leave Oz and return to Kansas.

Judy Garland is originally from Grands Rapids, the city where the shoes were stolen.

At the time of the theft, the ruby slippers were insured for $1 million.
