A recent NYC subway news reveals that a viral video on May 1 showed Daniel Penny, 24, strangling Jordan Neely, 30, aboard an F train in Manhattan. Reports say aside from Penny, a second passenger restrained Neely’s arms, while a third passenger also held his shoulders down. Thereafter, the medical examiner states that Neely died from compression on his neck.

An article in Deutsche Welle states that Neely’s death triggered widespread protests concerning racial inequality and that of New York’s social services for those who are impoverished. Following the hearing, Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan District Attorney, stated that prosecutors decided to charge Penny after interrogating eyewitnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and discussing with medical examiners.
