Governor Brian Kemp announced in a statement that the state provided a surplus Georgia tax rebate for the year 2023.

According to him, the surplus resulted from years of careful and cautious budgeting and because the state made a conscious effort to prioritize its citizens’ safety and their economic well-being during the pandemic.

Georgia Tax Refund 2023: How Much Should You Get?

Your Georgia surplus tax refund for 2023 will depend on how much tax you owe in 2021. Here are the maximum amounts for each filing status.

Filing Status 2023 Georgia Surplus Refund Amount
Single Up to $250
Married Filing Separately Up to $250
Head of Household Up to $375
Married Filing Jointly Up to $500

Georgia has started sending out the first of its surplus tax refund payments. It’s worth noting that this is happening at a time when many Georgians have been given an extended IRS tax deadline. If you’re a taxpayer in Georgia or one of seven other states, you might be happy to hear that you have some extra time to file your federal tax returns for 2022. This is because of severe storms and natural disasters that have affected those areas.

The IRS has announced that individuals and businesses in Georgia who were affected by the recent storms will have until October 16, 2023, to file their federal tax returns and make payments.

Are You Eligible?

Georgia tax rebates for 2023 were made possible by a law called House Bill 162. The bill offers a tax credit to Georgia taxpayers who filed their state income tax returns for the years 2021 and 2022. This credit will be a one-time surplus tax refund.

To receive a refund, you’ll need to have filed your taxes by the tax deadline of April 18, 2023. If you were given more time, you must submit your filing by October 16, 2023. Did you have a tax liability for the 2021 tax year as well? If you’re a resident of Georgia (even if you only lived there part of the year) or a nonresident, you might be able to get a refund. You may get more information about surplus tax refunds on the state’s website.

If you’re a Georgian who filed your state tax returns by April 18, 2023, you can expect to receive your rebates soon. If you qualify for a surplus tax refund in Georgia and haven’t filed your 2022 tax return yet because of the extended tax deadline, your rebate won’t be processed until you file your tax return.
