Newsbreak: President Biden Unveils Plan to Extend Health Care Coverage to DACA Recipients, Promoting Health Equity and Inclusivity for Undocumented Immigrants

President Joe Biden has unveiled a plan to extend health care coverage to recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, offering affordable insurance options for the approximately 580,000 DACA recipients who have temporary legal status as undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children.

President Biden aims to enhance the DACA program by extending healthcare coverage for its recipients.

Efforts to Strengthen DACA Amid Immigration Reform Challenges

In an effort to bolster the DACA program, President Biden has announced a plan to expand health care coverage for DACA recipients. This comes as comprehensive immigration reform faces challenges in Congress, with Republicans criticizing the administration’s handling of border security and legally challenging moves to strengthen DACA and other programs.

Despite these obstacles, the Biden administration is determined to implement the health care expansion by the end of the month. The proposed plan would allow DACA recipients to enroll in health plans through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Medicaid, with the Department of Health and Human Services proposing a rule to expand the eligibility criteria for these programs.

President Biden has emphasized the need for Congress to provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, stating that it is “past time” for them to have such an opportunity. The proposed expansion of health care coverage for DACA recipients reflects the administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and addressing immigration policy.

Income-Based Financial Assistance for Eligible DACA Recipients

Under the proposed plan, according to a report by CNN, DACA recipients who meet the eligibility criteria could qualify for income-based financial assistance when applying for health care coverage through the federal ACA marketplace. This would provide affordable health insurance options for DACA recipients, making it more accessible for them to obtain necessary medical care.

President Biden’s plan aims to ensure that DACA recipients have the same opportunities for affordable health care as other Americans. By expanding the eligibility criteria for DACA recipients to access health care through the ACA and Medicaid, the administration is working towards promoting health equity and inclusivity for vulnerable populations, including undocumented immigrants.
