On April 11, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently confirmed that several taxpayers who have already filed the inflation relief they received, in the form of stimulus checks, as income are eligible to receive the 2023 Tax Refunds. This is because the checks are reportedly not subject to federal taxes. This means that eligible taxpayers can file an amended tax return once they make sure that they have paid taxes on a state refund.

According to Salemann, the IRS had previously announced that the taxpayers from the states of Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Oregon, New York, New Mexico, New Jersey, Maine, Indiana, Indiana, Idaho, Florida, Hawaii, Delaware, Connecticut, Colorado, and California are not required to file the stimulus checks as income. In addition, the taxpayers from the states of Virginia, South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Georgia may not also include special 2023 Tax Refunds as income for federal taxes if they meet specific requirements.

How to File For 2023 Tax Refunds

According to Lightman, taxpayers who have already submitted their tax returns electronically can file an amended tax return electronically again. Last February, the IRS had confirmed that taxpayers are now given the option to choose direct deposit payment instead of waiting for paper checks for faster delivery of 2023 Tax Refunds. This is because paper checks can draw out the time to process amended tax returns.

Nonetheless, for taxpayers who did not file electronically and still chose to file tax returns in the form of paper, a paper check will also be received in the mail. The paper version of the amended tax return should be mailed to the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Austin, TX 73301-0052.
