What Happened?
According to police reports, 35-year-old Babacar Mbengue was dropping off a 16-year-old passenger at the ICON Theatre on Delano Court when an argument broke out between them over the cost of the ride. The driver then allegedly followed the teenager inside the theater and got into a physical altercation with him on an escalator.
During the altercation, the teenager dropped his loaded 9mm handgun, which Mbengue picked up and fired seven shots into the air inside the theater, as per FOX 32 in Chicago.
Both the driver and the teenager were taken into custody, and Mbengue was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm while the teenager was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, both felonies.

Lyft’s Response
Lyft, the ride-hailing company, responded to the incident by stating that they had permanently removed the driver from their platform and were prepared to assist law enforcement with any investigations.
According to Lyft’s policy, as reported by Fox News, passengers must be at least 18 years of age to open an account, and unaccompanied minors are not allowed to use their services. If a driver suspects that a passenger is underage, they are responsible for asking the passenger to confirm their age, and if the passenger is indeed underage, the driver is required to cancel the ride.
The Incident highlights the importance of safety for both drivers and passengers and the need to de-escalate conflicts before they turn violent.
