Insurrectionist Who Trapped Officer in Capitol Door Faces Nearly 16 Years in Prison as DOJ Sends Strong Message: Violence Will Not Be Tolerated

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking a prison sentence of almost 16 years for Patrick McCaughey III, an insurrectionist who trapped a police officer in a door during the attack on the Capitol in 2021.

The Severity of McCaughey’s Crimes

The government is requesting a 188-month sentence for McCaughey, which is one of the longest sentences it has requested for a Jan. 6 insurrectionist, according to Politico. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Paschall noted in a sentencing memorandum filed on Friday that McCaughey’s actions were particularly “egregious and protracted” compared to those of the other insurrectionists he stood trial with.

Paschall stated that the defendant’s behavior was extremely wicked and that his punishment should be commensurate with that. She further stated that the defendant’s behavior on January 6 demonstrated a complete lack of respect for the rule of law and a willingness to provoke and participate in violent acts. Given the severity and circumstances of the defendant’s offenses, Paschall believed that a lengthy prison sentence was appropriate.

Furthermore, according to The Hill, McCaughey’s use of a stolen riot shield to trap Officer Hodges for over two minutes is one of the most recognizable moments of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. This incident demonstrates McCaughey’s total disregard for the safety and well-being of law enforcement officials who were defending the Capitol and those inside it.
