Former Lieutenant DeWayne Smith has reportedly retired with benefits a day before the hearing for his termination. Smith was terminated in connection with the death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis.

According to Mion, Ben Crump, the attorney for Tyre Nichols’ family, also argued that the Memphis Police Department should have not allowed Smith to avoid the consequences of his actions and even retire with benefits. He added that the authorities must do everything they can to implicate the Memphis Police Supervisor and all others who were involved with Nichols’ death.

Memphis Police Supervisor In Tyre Nichols’ Death
According to Wehner, seven other officers from the Memphis Police Department were also terminated for the death of Tyre Nichols. Five of the officers were Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith. All five have faced charges of second-degree murder apart from Smith.
