Local News in Los Angeles: Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell was found dead in his Home.

Suspect Carlos Medina has confessed to killing Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell, 69, at his house in Hacienda Heights, an unincorporated area 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Gascón said Medina confessed at a Wednesday press conference.

A man was accused of murdering a Catholic bishop in a case that shocked Los Angeles’ immigrant and religious populations. Carlos Medina, the husband of the bishop’s housekeeper, was arrested Monday by a SWAT team and charged with one count of murder with a special allegation that he personally used a firearm. Gascón revealed at a press conference that O’Connell suffered multiple gunshot wounds before his death (Nerozzi, 2023).

Medica faces a murder charge and a special allegation of using a firearm in the commission of an offense. He was arrested at his home in Torrance, 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, days after the killing, following a standoff with police. According to the witnesses, the suspect was acting strangely and making comments about the bishop owing him money.

O’Connell, 69, was appointed by Pope Francis as an auxiliary bishop of the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 2015. For his efforts with the county’s immigrant community and other disadvantaged groups, he received recognition. Investigators don’t think the debt has any basis in reality.
