Solo renters living alone in an apartment with only one bedroom are paying over $19,500 for a year more than couples who live together do. In Manhattan itself, the yearly Singles Tax increases to $24,000.

According to Rodriguez, the Singles Tax depends on how much a solo renter will have to pay every year for an average apartment with one bedroom. This will be in comparison to renters who split their rent on the same unit with their partner. Between both, those with partners can save an average of $39,000 in rent per year.

Singles Tax in Other States

According to Cachero, solo renters with a one bedroom unit all for themselves in San Francisco Bay Area in California also pay an expensive cost of rent. Residents in San Francisco are charged with a singles tax worth $14,114. This amount is the second highest among the cities in the U.S., followed by San Jose at $12,401.

Real estate Zillow’s home trends expert, Amanda Pendleton, stated that living alone allows solo renters to do as they please. However, all the freedom they have comes with a cost. The rent prices are reportedly starting to dwindle, but they are still significantly higher than they were in 2022. Across the U.S., solo renters pay almost an additional $7,000 for an average apartment with one bedroom only.
