WalletHub has released its latest report, “2023’s Most Sinful States in America,” which ranks all 50 states on their behavior. According to the report, which was released on February 14, 2023, the study used 47 key indicators to determine which states engaged in immoral or illicit behavior, including violent crimes, excessive drinking, and gambling disorders. The top five most sinful states were Nevada, California, Louisiana, Florida, and Pennsylvania, while the least sinful states were Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, Idaho, and Wyoming.
The study also categorized states Into seven broad categories: anger, jealousy, excess, greed, lust, vanity, and laziness, based on a report by Fox News on February 20, 2023. Red states performed poorly on anger, excess, and sloth, while blue states topped the list for jealousy and greed. Lust and vanity were bipartisan vices. The study’s author, Micah E. Johnson, believes that a city’s sinfulness is rooted in macro-level factors like employment, law, and culture.
The study calculated each category using per capita statistics, including violent crimes, time spent on adult sites, obesity rates, and cases of fraud. It is important to note that there is a significant variation in behavior from city to city within each state, as reported by Fox News.
Micah E. Johnson, an assistant professor at the University of South Florida, said that a city’s sinfulness is rooted in factors like employment, law, and culture. The most saintly states prioritize health and wellness despite their challenges, but there’s a lot of variation within each state.
