Prosecutors have revealed that Alex Murdaugh’s son, Paul, confronted him about his drug use a month before he and his mother were shot to death on their South Carolina hunting estate. Based on a report by Olivia Land of the New York Post on February 17, 2023, jurors were shown a text that Paul sent to his father, in which he stated that they needed to talk about his drug use when he arrived. Paul had discovered several bags of pills in his father’s computer bag at the family’s Edisto Beach house. Murdaugh is accused of executing his son and wife on June 7, 2021.

A report by Fox News on February 18, 2023, Indicated that during the trial, Assistant Attorney General Creighton Waters called special agent Peter Rudofski as the state’s final witness. Rudofski introduced a transcribed voicemail from Murdaugh and revealed that Maggie, Murdaugh’s wife, conducted several internet searches between May 6 and May 26, 2021, to identify specific pills. Maggie referred to Paul as her “little detective” because he was determined to find any pills in the house that his father shouldn’t be taking.

Murdaugh later acknowledged spending up to $60,000 per week on drugs and arranging for his drug dealer to shoot him in the head on September 4, 2021, so that his living son could get a $10 million life insurance benefit. Murdaugh also confessed to misappropriating fees from his law firm and clients to fuel his addiction. He faces 99 counts of financial crimes and 19 indictments, alleging that he stole nearly $9 million through various schemes. Prosecutors argue that Murdaugh killed his wife and son to prevent his financial misdeeds from being exposed.
