A man who was trying to steal a catalytic converter from a parked SUV in Southern California was struck and killed when the driver of the car, who had been sleeping, got out of the car and started to drive away.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the death happened Tuesday evening in a parking lot for a store in Palmdale.
Deputies arrived and discovered a Ford Excursion partially backed out of a parking space, a man on the ground, and a smaller vehicle in the adjacent space.
The Excursion’s driver was allegedly asleep when the smaller car pulled up, and one of the four occupants got out and started sawing the Ford’s catalytic converter off.
According to an article published by Fox News on February 15, 2023, the victim woke up from the sound, turned on the car, put it in reverse, and felt a bump like she ran something over. She ran over the suspect and immediately stopped, leaving him on the ground.
When the suspect needed medical attention, the driver dialed 911. At a hospital, the suspect was pronounced dead. The other three occupants of the smaller car were taken into custody. Names were withheld.
