The tax rebates should have already been received by the end of 2022 for those who have filed their 2021 taxes by October 17. However, for those who have decided to file late, the Department of Revenue of South Carolina has extended the deadline due to the Hurricane Ian. With this extension, tax filers have only until February 15 to file their taxes and the tax rebates are expected to be received by March.According to Bradford, the state of South Carolina has begun issuing tax rebates to eligible recipients since November 2022. To date, South Carolina’s DOR announced that the state has already issued more than 1 million tax rebates worth more than $1 billion. The officials have also emphasized that the tax rebates will not be taxable.

Who is eligible for these tax rebates?
According to Russo, to be eligible for the tax rebates, one must have filed within the extended deadline and have an income tax liability in 2021. Those who have lived in South Carolina for some time or the whole of 2021 may be eligible as long as they filed income taxes that year. For tax filers who have tax liabilities of no more than $800, they can receive tax rebates that are equal to the amount they owe. If the tax liabilities are beyond $800, the tax rebates will be an exact amount of $800. The tax rebates will be issued via direct deposit payments or paper checks based on what was stated in the 2021 taxes.
