In December 2022, the Lafayette Police Department has started receiving reports about a suspicious male dealing with methamphetamine drugs and approaching women for sexual favors. There have been several reports of this incident since then. Hence, the Special Victim Unit department started an investigation into these complaints. The investigations led the department to identify the suspect who has been the prime focus of the investigators.

According to Betz, on February 1, around 12:30 p.m., the authorities pulled over the alleged suspect near the intersection of N. 18th Street and Union Street. The suspect, who was identified as Sergey Macheret, 65, was then arrested. Reports stated that Macheret is a professor of aeronautical and astronautical engineering at Purdue University. According to Christy, Macheret has faced charges of making an unlawful proposition, possession of methamphetamine, and dealing methamphetamine.
