The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) monthly benefits for this month were expected to be delivered yesterday, February 1. The benefits this month are the first to be delivered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) this year. Technically, these benefits should have been the second. However, the first day of January was the New Year holiday and fell on a weekend.

According to Notheis, the monthly SSI benefits are generally delivered on the first day of every month excluding the days that fall on a weekend or a holiday. When this occurs, the benefits will instead be delivered on the last weekday of the month prior. Therefore, the January 1 benefits were delivered on December 30, 2022 instead. Nonetheless, there are a total of 12 payments that must be delivered annually. This year, the benefits for the months of March, June, September, and December will be delivered twice. This is because the months after them start with a weekend or a holiday.

Who is eligible for these monthly SSI benefits?

According to Weiss, to be eligible for the monthly SSI benefits, individuals must have less than $2,000 worth of assets, while couples have less than $3,000. If eligible, individuals will receive $914 monthly benefits compared to the $841 in 2022. On the other hand, couples will be receiving a maximum of $1,371. The increase in benefits is due to the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increasing by 8.7% this 2023. Unfortunately, those who also receive Social Security will likely receive less SSI benefits.

To apply for SSI, applications can be done on the Social Security Administration (SSA) website. One can also call 1-800-772-1213 to ask for an SSA representative. Documents including birth certificate, Social Security number, payroll slips, and information about income and household must be prepared. If an applicant is blind or disabled, they must also prepare for information about the clinics and hospitals they have visited. Ultimately, the benefits will be delivered to eligible recipients electronically.
