Up To $1,204 Relief Payments To 25 U.S. Cities Under Guaranteed Basic Income Program

Up to $1,204 in relief payments will be received by 25 U.S. cities under the Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) program. Read and find out if your city is on the list!

According to Johnson, the following are the cities in the U.S. that will be receiving relief payments:

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

• Length: March 2022 to February 2023
• Recipients: 110 single mothers
• Payments: $375 per month

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

• Length: March 2022 to March 2025
• Recipients: 150 residents who are receiving general relief benefits (ages 18 to 24 only)
• Payments: $1,204, one-time

MARIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

• Length: 2021 to 2023
• Recipients: 125 women with low income, raising at least one child below 18 years old
• Payments: $1,000 per month

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA

• Length: December 2022 to December 2023
• Recipients: 166 residents
• Payments: $500 per month

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA

• Length: April 2022 to October 2023
• Recipients: 25 LGBTQIA residents (ages 50 or older only) 
• Payments: $1,000 per month

ATLANTA GEORGIA

• Length: 1 year from acceptance
• Recipients: 300 residents who live below 200% of the federal poverty line
• Payments: $500 per month

GEORGIA

• Length: Early 2022 to early 2024
• Recipients: 650 Black women from Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward 
• Payments: $850 per month or a one-time lump sum payment

COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS

• Length: December 2022 to December 2023
• Recipients: 3,000 residents living at or below 250% of the federal poverty line
• Payments: $500 per month

EVANSTON, ILLINOIS

• Length: November 2022 to November 2023
• Recipients: 150 residents with low income 
• Payments: $500 per month

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA

• Length: January 2022 to February 2023
• Recipients: 115 residents previously incarcerated
• Payments: $1,000 for a month, then $600 per month for 11 months

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

• Length: July 2022 to July 2023
• Recipients: 5,000 residents earning less than $35,000 a year
• Payments: $500 per month

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

• Length: April 2022 to April 2023
• Recipients: 150 residents between the ages of 18 to 24
• Payments: $500 per month

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISANA

• Length: 10 months from acceptance
• Recipients: 125 unemployed or not in school residents between the ages of 16 to 24 
• Payments: $350 per month

SHREVEPORT, LOUISANA

• Length: March 2022 to March 2023
• Recipients: 110 single parents or legal guardians of school-aged children
• Payments: $660 per month

LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS

• Length: May 2021 to May 2024
• Recipients: 15 new mothers
• Payments: $400 per month

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA

• Length: Spring 2022 to Spring 2024
• Recipients: 200 families 
• Payments: $500 per month

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI

• Length: May 2022 to present
• Recipients: 100 Black mothers with low income 
• Payments: $1,000 per month

NEW YORK

• Length: April 2022 to November 2023
• Recipients: 2,400 artists 
• Payments: $1,000 per month

HUDSON, NEW YORK

• Length: 2020 to 2025
• Recipients: 25 residents
• Payments: $500 per month

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

• Length: 3 years from acceptance
• Recipients: 100 pregnant or new mothers with a baby under 1 year old
• Payments: $1,000 per month

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK

• Length: 1 year from acceptance
• Recipients: 175 families with low income
• Payments: $500 per month

DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA

• Length: 2022 to February 2023
• Recipients: 115 residents who were incarcerated in the last five years
• Payments: $500 per month

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

• Length: March 2022 to March 2023
• Recipients: 60 residents who have received TANF for at least five years 
• Payments: $500 per month

ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA

• Length: February 2023 to February 2025
• Recipients: 150 residents
• Payments: $500 per month

WASHINGTON, D.C

• Length: February 2022 to February 2023
• Payments: 132 new and expectant mothers from Wards 5, 7, and 8 
• Participants: $900 per month

According to Nick, the Guaranteed Basic Income program especially targets inequality by providing financial assistance to those in need. Recipients include those who live below the poverty line, without stable or no income at all, and in marginalized communities like people of color. With the GBI, individuals who do not struggle to afford their basic needs will not receive financial assistance.
