The St. Louis Board of Aldermen in Missouri has approved a program that will provide $500 monthly payments to 440 low-income families for a period of 18 months.
The program has a budget of $5 million and will be funded by pandemic recovery funds. The payments are intended to help families who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program still needs to be approved by Mayor Tishaura Jones before it can be finalized.
26th Ward Alderwoman Shameem Clark Hubbard told STLPR that it is difficult not to get excited when considering the allocations, the departments they will go into, the work they are already doing, and how this will increase capacity.
The payments will be unrestricted and can be used for whatever the families see fit. There will be no conditions or restrictions to the payments.
To be eligible to receive payments, you must be a low-income parent or guardian of children in city public schools who have experienced financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have an annual income of less than $47,000 for a family of four.
