$914 Increase in SSI Payments on December 30

Social Security Income (SSI) recipients will of $914 on December 30th, making it the second payment they will receive this month.

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA) in its blog on December 5, 2022, SSI recipients are receiving two payments this month because the first day of January falls on a national holiday, New Year’s Day. The SSA issues check on the business day prior to months that begin on a weekend or holiday to ensure that beneficiaries receive them by the first of the month.

The SSA also added that the payment being Issued on December 30th will be slightly higher than the payment issued on December 1st, which was worth $841. This is because the SSA is enacting a cost of living adjustment to monthly benefits, leading to the upcoming payment being 8.7% larger. The total amount of the two payments is $1,755.

In addition to SSI recipients, essential persons, or those who live with and provide necessary care for an SSI recipient, will also receive a second payment on December 30th worth $458. Eligible couples will also receive two payments this month, each worth $1,261.

The December 30th payment will be the first of the 2023 SSI payments. SSI recipients will not receive a payment in January. Normally, SSI recipients receive one payment per month for a total of 12 payments per year. In 2023, SSI recipients will receive two payments in the same month in April, June, September, and December because the first of those months falls on a weekend or holiday.

According to Asher Notheis of the Washington Examiner on December 15, 2022, the SSA is making additional payments in 2023 to ensure that SSI recipients receive one payment per month. The payment schedule is being adjusted to accommodate national holidays and weekends, allowing beneficiaries to consistently access their monthly payments.
