Darién Jungle Migration Surges, Prompting Humanitarian Concerns
Migration through the Darién jungle has surged, doubling in 2023 to over 520,000 migrants compared to the previous year. The journey is perilous due to the jungle and armed groups. While some of 100000 migrants have tried alternative routes like the Caribbean, accidents still occur. Upon reaching Panama, migrants are taken to centers before being assisted to Costa Rica but they must cover their own travel expenses. The Panamanian government‘s crackdown on jungle transit citing criminal control, has strained relations with aid groups like Doctors Without Borders, prompting them to halt operations in the area.
