California Governor Gavin Newsom, accompanied by city leaders and public safety officials, is urging support for Proposition 1—a $6.4-billion bond on the March 5 primary ballot aiming to overhaul the state’s mental health system. The measure seeks to reform the Mental Health Services Act, redirecting 30% of its funding to provide 10,000 new behavioral-health beds and expand substance abuse and mental health services. Newsom emphasizes the need for change, addressing concerns raised by mental health workers, Mayor Karen Bass, and Sheriff Robert Luna at the Los Angeles General Medical Center.
