Survivor’s Personal Journey: Inspiring Prostate Cancer Awareness and Early Screening

Prostate cancer, the most common cancer among men, is in focus as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month wraps up. According to ABC30, Leonard Zasoski, a 12-year survivor, is urging women to motivate men to get screened. His prostate cancer awareness journey began when his father was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, a painful experience he hopes to spare others from.

To reduce his own risk, Zasoski started taking Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests in his 30s. At 50, the test hinted at prostate cancer, which was later confirmed. His prostate cancer awareness leads to his decision to seek treatment because of his desire to see his family grow.

Prostate Cancer Awareness: Dr. Bhavin Patel Stresses Early PSA Testing for Detection

Dr. Bhavin Patel, a urologist, emphasizes the importance of regular PSA testing for men aged 50-55, with earlier testing for high-risk groups. According to Mayo Clinic, prostate cancer often shows no symptoms until later stages, making early detection crucial.

Financial obstacles can discourage men from getting screened, but a new bill, the PSA Screening for HIM Act, aims to mandate insurance coverage for at-risk individuals. Advocates like Ron Subia are actively working to gain support for this legislation. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic reducing screening rates, raising prostate cancer awareness to encourage men to prioritize their health and get screened regularly. Early detection through PSA tests can save lives by identifying risks before symptoms appear.
