In an inspiring story of resilience, 17-year-old Josh Burton from Wisconsin has faced and conquered immense challenges to pursue his dream of becoming a paleontologist. After surviving two double lung transplants within two years, Josh’s determination shines as he’s supported by Northwestern Medicine and the Field Museum of Natural History.
According CBS News, Josh’s journey began when he was adopted from Guatemala as a baby and developed a deep love for paleontology while growing up in Madison, Wisconsin. However, his dream seemed unattainable when he was diagnosed with a serious lung condition during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
At the age of 14, Josh underwent his first double lung transplant, but a year later, complications arose when he contracted RSV, causing his new lungs to fail. Facing numerous rejections from hospitals for a second transplant, Northwestern Medicine finally stepped in to give him another chance.

Josh’s Second Double Lung Transplant Triumph and Unwavering Passion for Paleontology
Despite multiple hurdles, including 13 failed lung donor matches, Josh received his second double lung transplant successfully on June 28, 2023. Although he couldn’t work with dirt due to his transplants, the Field Museum helped him discover alternative paths to pursue his passion for paleontology, , as reported by WKOW.
