$5 Million Settlement: Californians Who Are U-Haul Data Breach Victims Can Claim $100 – How to Qualify

According to The US Sun, U-Haul is providing $100 payments to eligible Californians who are U-Haul data breach victims following a $5 million settlement. The breaches which occurred in September 2022 and December 202, exposed sensitive personal information of U-Haul data breach victims including names and driver’s license numbers. The company while denying any wrongdoing agreed to the settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit claimed that an unauthorized third party accessed U-Haul’s files compromising consumer data. To qualify for the payment residents must have lived in California between November 5, 2021, and April 5, 2022 or around December 5, 2023 when the breaches took place. Additionally, U-Haul data breach victims must have received a Notice of Recent Security Incident letter from U-Haul.

The settlement fund amounts to $5,085,000 but the final payment to each U-Haul data breach victims. Payments are estimated to be around $100,though this could increase or decrease based on the remaining funds after covering class representative service awards, legal fees and administrative costs. Eligible claimants have until October 15 to submit their claims. The final approval hearing for the payout is set for October 23 though it is unclear when the payments will be issued. Those who wish to exclude themselves from the settlement or object to its terms must do so by September 16. Class-action lawsuits are a way for groups of Americans to collectively address grievances against a company. In this case affected individuals are receiving compensation as part of the settlement which includes an agreement by U-Haul to pay out without admitting guilt. Data breaches have become more common with many companies storing significant amounts of data in the cloud. In 2023 over 80% of data breaches involved cloud-stored information. These incidents often result from issues like overly permissive cloud access and unsecured backups.

In addition to the U-Haul settlement other class-action settlements are also available. For example, a nutrition and energy bar company is distributing payments from a $12 million settlement. Officials have advised those involved in the U-Haul settlement to be patient as they wait for their payments.
