House Budget Cuts Put Environmental Regulations and Public Health at Risk as Global Temperatures Rise

The U.S. House of Representatives’ proposed 2025 budget includes significant cuts to conservation efforts worrying environmental advocates as global temperatures rise. The House committees approved bills that reduce funding for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by 20% and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) by 12%. These cuts threaten essential programs like research, habitat restoration, disaster preparedness, and water quality testing. Surfrider has pointed out “harmful policy provisions” in the budget such as new oil and gas leasing mandates and restrictions on federal agencies’ ability to regulate polluters, according to the report of TDC.

The budget cuts have serious consequences for environmental regulation and public health. With less funding, the EPA may struggle to enforce water and air quality standards. One proposal aims to triple funding for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund to improve wastewater systems and prevent sewage spills. However, the budget also includes measures to prevent the EPA from collecting fees from companies that emit excessive methane and a potent greenhouse gas. This is concerning because reducing methane emissions is crucial to fighting climate change.

Record Funding for Border Water Treatment and Conservation Efforts in the

Despite these challenges, there are positive developments. The House bills propose record funding for the International Boundary and Water Commission to upgrade and maintain the International Wastewater Treatment at the U.S.-Mexico border. Funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which was cut last year is also set to be restored. Environmental advocates including Surfrider urge the public to contact their representatives and support sustainable policies. By choosing eco-friendly brands and voting for politicians who prioritize environmental protection, individuals can help create a more sustainable future. The Senate’s upcoming budget proposals are expected to be more protective of funding levels offering hope for conservation efforts.
