Government Funding Crisis Looms as Senate Reaches Impasse on Budget Bills

As Congress takes its August break, lawmakers face a critical deadline to fund the government and avoid a shutdown. The Senate will recess at week’s end, and the House is already on break. Both chambers will return on September 9. With none of the 12 funding bills signed by President Biden and a shutdown is a real risk if Congress doesn’t act promptly.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. predicts that Congress will likely use a continuing resolution (CR) to keep funding at current levels. The House has passed 5 of the 12 bills, but the Senate has rejected them due to major funding cuts. The Senate Appropriations Committee is working on 11 bills with some bipartisan support but none have been voted on by the full Senate yet and added spending may face House Republican opposition, according to the report of SAN.

Faces Crunch Deadline to Resolve Funding Issue Amid Election Season

When Congress returns, they will have only 15 days to resolve the funding issue. After a three-week session senators will campaign in October leaving just 24 days in mid-November before Congress adjourns. If no agreement is reached, the new Congress and president in January will need to address the funding problems. The impact of these delays will soon become clear with elections approaching and many challenges ahead.
