Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits

This week, 33 states, territories, and the District of Columbia are sending out Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to those who qualify. SNAP helps low- and no-income households by providing money for food. The amount of benefits depends on income with families needing to earn at or below 100% of the federal poverty line to qualify. Benefits are loaded onto electronic cards that can be used at stores like Walmart and Costco. A family of eight can get up to $1,751 per month with extra funds for each additional person beyond eight, according to the report of Washington Examiner.

SNAP Benefits Distribution Dates Vary Across the Country

In August, the dates when SNAP benefits are distributed vary a lot across the country. Some states, like California, Colorado, and the District of Columbia start giving out benefits on August 1. Others, like Alabama and Indiana, begin on August 4. Places like Florida and Texas will spread their payments out over the whole month with some ending as late as August 28. States like New Hampshire and Vermont have very short windows, with benefits available on only one day.

Different states handle SNAP benefits in various ways. Some schedule payments based on a person’s number, while others use the first letter of the claimant’s last name. This variety in how benefits are given out shows the different methods states use to make sure people get the help they need throughout the month.
