From Financial Strain to Freedom: Sheila Reed’s Debt Forgiveness

According to BUSINESS INSIDER, Sheila Reed at 57 years old has reached a significant turning point after a grueling struggle with student loans spanning more than a decade. Initially enticed by the prospect of a career in law enforcement Reed enrolled at Westwood College in the early 2000s with hopes of realizing her professional aspirations. However, upon graduating in 2007 she found herself disillusioned as her degree failed to open doors to the job opportunities promised by the institution. Despite her efforts Reed was burdened with a substantial student loan debt totaling $112,000 plunging her into years of financial hardship marked by difficulty in meeting monthly payments and periods of forbearance that only exacerbated her financial woes.

The pivotal moment in Reed’s journey arrived on March 29, 2023 when she received a letter from the Education Department delivering life-changing news her entire student-loan balance had been forgiven. This forgiveness was granted under the borrower defense to repayment a mechanism designed to alleviate the debts of students whose schools engaged in fraudulent practices. Westwood College’s closure in 2016 and subsequent investigations revealed systematic misrepresentation of career prospects and earning potential prompting the Department of Education to take action and provide relief to Reed and many others similarly misled.
