Maximize Savings During Ohio‘s 10-Day Sales Tax Holiday

Ohio consumers have an 10-day sales tax holiday to look forward to this summer that will run from July 30 to August 8, according to The Columbus Dispatch. The goal of this 10-day event is to provide locals with cost savings on a range of items such as school supplies, clothes, and restaurant meals. During the sales tax holiday all eligible items costing up to $500 will be exempt from both the state’s 5.75% sales tax and any additional county or local sales taxes. The amount you can save depends on the county you live in. Each Ohio county has its own additional sales tax rate on top of the state’s 5.75%. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand how much you could save during this special period.

For example, in Adams County which has an additional 1.50% sales tax shoppers usually pay a total of 7.25% in sales tax. During the 10-day sales tax holiday this amount is completely waived. Similarly, if you live in Franklin County where the additional rate is 1.25%, the usual 7% tax is also waived. Counties like Allen and Ashtabula both with a 1% additional tax will see the total sales tax of 6.75% waived. This means that on a $500 purchase residents save $33.75. Even counties with lower additional rates like Butler (0.75%), see significant savings. Normally, residents here pay a total of 6.50% in sales tax. But during the holiday they’ll save $32.50 on a $500 purchase. Some of the lowest additional rates are found in Stark and Summit Counties both at just 0.50%. Usually, the total sales tax in these counties is 6.25%. So, shoppers here can look forward to saving $31.25 on a $500 purchase. The highest additional rate is found in Coshocton County at 2%. Residents here typically pay 7.75% in sales tax so they will save $38.75 on a $500 purchase during the holiday.
