East Sussex Council Mulls Over £114,000 Tax Reduction to Aid Low-Income Families
Eastbourne Council Proposes Tax Cuts for Poorest Residents
According to the news report of BBC, Eastbourne Borough Council in East Sussex is thinking about cutting council tax for some of the poorest people in the community. The proposal is aimed to help those with the lowest incomes by lowering their council tax bills. This change is especially focused on working age people who are financially struggling. If the plan goes through it would mean the council would collect over £114,000 less in taxes each year because of this the council would need to find new ways to cut costs and generate more income. A public consultation on these proposals is open until September 30th giving residents the chance to share their opinions. The proposed scheme has several key points. First it would reduce the council tax bills for the poorest working-age people. Second it would remove the minimum income floor for self-employed people which means they wouldn’t have to pay a set minimum amount. Lastly there would be no minimum award value meaning even small reductions in tax would be allowed.
Council leader Stephen Holt stated that Eastbourne Borough Council like many other local governments in the UK is facing severe financial difficulties. The proposed council tax cuts aim to provide relief to the poorest residents. To fund the scheme the financial burden would be shared among Eastbourne Borough Council, East Sussex County Council, Sussex Police, and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service according to their council tax shares. The council hopes to positively impact the lives of vulnerable residents while carefully managing its budget and finding ways to offset the lost income.
