Secret Service Busts EBT Fraud Ring: Ten Individuals Apprehended Across California in Operation April Fools

Rising Trend: EBT Fraud Cases Surge Over the Past 18-24 Months, Prompting Secret Service Action

The U.S. Secret Service recently collaborated with law enforcement agencies to apprehend 10 individuals across California for crimes connected to Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) fraud. This operation, known as Operation April Fools, aimed to tackle the installation of electronic devices on ATMs, gas pumps, or store terminals to steal card information. Criminals then use this stolen data from EBT debit cards, which lack chip technology, to encode it onto other cards, even something as basic as a hotel key.

According to the Secret Service, EBT fraud has been on the rise over the past 18-24 months, posing a significant problem in California and nationwide. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Michael Peck emphasized the Secret Service’s commitment to investigating and apprehending those responsible for EBT fraud to disrupt their networks and safeguard vulnerable communities. Seven individuals were arrested and charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, while the remaining three were apprehended and charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California.
