Rejection By The Kansas House

The Kansas House rejected a compromise tax plan that would have cut income taxes for those making more than $30,000, eliminated taxes on Social Security benefits, and ended the state sales tax on food.

Lawmakers were unhappy with the focus on top earners and the lack of property tax cuts leading to the rejection by the Kansas House.

The plan rejected by the Kansas House was sent back for more work, leaving the future of tax relief this year uncertain.

According to a published article by AOL.com, Governor Kelly had vetoed a previous tax plan favored by Republicans and reached a compromise this week, which was rejected by the Kansas House.

The Senate had approved the compromise in a 38-1 vote earlier in the day. It is unlikely that a new deal will be reached before adjournment, but lawmakers and the Kansas House will have another chance during their wrap-up session or a potential special session called by Governor Kelly.

Oceana’s Newest Report

In a published article by Yahoo Finance Canada, a recent report from Oceana revealed that Amazon produced 208 million pounds of plastic packaging waste in the U.S. in 2022, marking a 9.6% rise compared to the previous year.

Despite reducing plastic use in other markets, Amazon has not done the same in the U.S., leading to concerns about plastic pollution. Oceana estimates that a large amount of Amazon’s plastic packaging ends up as marine pollution, harming ocean ecosystems.

Shareholders are urging Amazon to reduce its plastic footprint by one-third and phase out plastic packaging in the U.S. to protect the environment.
