SNAP Benefits Processing Delays Leave Mecklenburg County Residents Struggling for Food Assistance
It’s difficult for a lot of folks in Mecklenburg County to receive the necessary food assistance. Applying for SNAP benefits, which subsidize food costs, is taking longer than it should. Only 58% of the food stamp applications were timely accepted by the county last week, according to a recent report by The Charlotte Observer. This is one of the lowest rates in North Carolina and far less than what is required.
Mecklenburg County’s Efforts to Address Food Stamp Recertification Wait Times
Over 4,800 people in Mecklenburg County were waiting to be recertified for food stamps in August 2023 according to information obtained by Channel 9. In other words, they were holding out for their benefits to be extended. For many who rely on these benefits to eat the backlog created numerous issues. But the county was able to eliminate the backlog in December after adding more employees to assist. Yet, many residents in the area continue to have serious issues with the delays in receiving food assistance.
