According to Audacy, in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia City Council is working on helping low-income people with their taxes. Councilmember Rue Landau is leading this effort. The Philadelphia City Council’s goal is to make sure that people who pay for tax help know they can get it for free. Many people who don’t have a lot of money rely on tax preparers to help them. But sometimes these preparers charge very high fees which can take away from the money people get back from their taxes like the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Philadelphia City Council Advances Bill to Address Overcharging

At a recent meeting, experts discussed how some people are overcharged for tax preparation services. Groups like Community Legal Services and the Taxpayer Support Clinic shared examples of clients facing high fees. Representatives from Free File, Inc. mentioned that some tax preparers offer free services but there’s concern about requiring businesses to inform clients about these options. Despite industry opposition, the Philadelphia City Council committee voted to advance the bill demonstrating their commitment to protecting people from unfair practices by tax preparers, especially those with low incomes. While further discussions and potential challenges lie ahead the Philadelphia City Council is willing to collaborate to improve the bill and ensure equitable access to tax assistance for all.
