Unlocking Sustainability and Affordability: How the Inflation Reduction Act’s Updated Tax Credits for Used EVs are Expanding Access to Electric Vehicles

Since January 1, 2023, a fresh set of tax credits for vehicles, both new and used, has been in effect. As the Capitol continues to refine the qualifying terms for these tax credits, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs), it has led to continuous adjustments in which used EVs qualify. While the $7,500 federal tax credit remains available for new EV purchases under revised terms, the requirements leave few current EVs eligible. However, individuals may find a viable option in purchasing used EVs, which now offer revamped federal tax credits up to $4,000, subject to specific criteria.

The revised terms, outlined in the Inflation Reduction Act signed by President Biden, extend federal tax credits to used EV purchases meeting certain conditions. These conditions include a sale price of $25,000 or less and a model year at least two years earlier than the purchase year. Additionally, individuals must meet income eligibility requirements and other stipulations outlined by the IRS. This shift towards incentivizing used EV purchases aims to broaden accessibility to EV ownership while also encouraging sustainability.
